Abstract:
Protest movements have swept up in different parts of the world. In recent times, the #antiCAA protests in India and the #BlackLivesMatter protests in the USA have gained publicity and momentum as they witnessed major public participation in the digital space. Our project revolves around three key areas of analysis; the relationship of the protests with the government, the engagement of the protests with political parties in opposition, and studying celebrity engagement and media coverage of the protests. The methodologies we have used in exploring these questions are studying newspapers and books, discourse analysis and twitter analysis. We have comparatively studied the cases to answer how digital movements ignite, grow, and sustain. The main objective is to analyse how protests emerge in right-wing populist regimes, like India and the USA.
