dc.description.abstract Lip reading is used to understand and interpret speech without hearing it. It is a technique especially mastered by people with hearing difficulties. This special ability to lip read enables people with a hearing impairment to communicate with others helping them to engage in social activities. The Recent advances in the field of computer vision, signal processing and pattern recognition has led to the growing interest in automating the challenging task of lip reading. Automating the human ability to lip read is the process referred to as Visual Speech Recognition (VSR) VSR has received a lot of attention in the last decade for its potential use in applications such as human-computer interaction (HCI), audio-visual speech recognition (AVSR), speaker recognition, talking heads, sign language recognition and video surveillance. The main aim of VSR is to recognise spoken words by using only the visual signal that is produced during speech.Therefore ,it deals with the visual domain of speech involving image processing, artificial intelligence, object detection, pattern recognition, statistical modelling, etc. en_US
